MS Dhoni: 100 ODI stumpings

Today, by effecting a stumping off Yuzvendra Chahal, MS Dhoni added yet another milestone in the record books under his name - The first wicket-keeper to effect 100 stumpings in ODI cricket.

It all started in his 3rd match vs Bangladesh on 27 Dec 2004, as Rajin Saleh for the very first time witnessed what was going to come from that long-haired debutant (in that series) who was standing behind the wickets in years to come.

Today, after 12 years 8 months and 7 days, here is MS Dhoni with 100 ODI career stumpings (43 in home matches and 57 in away matches), the first keeper to achieve this feat.

Let's have a look at the year by year statistic starting from his first in 2004 to his 100th in 2017.
Now, who are those batsman who had to face the lightning fast hands of the Dhoni in ODIs?

The batsman who have been stumped on most occasions by MS Dhoni are RSA's AB de Villiers and BD's Shakib al Hasan (3 each).

The bowlers for whom MS Dhoni has effected more stumpings (>10) are Harbhajan Singh (19), Ravindra Jadeja (15) and R Ashwin (14).

With 100 ODI stumpings and 161 international stumpings, MS Dhoni now sits on top of both the lists, holds the 4th place (23 st) in T20Is and is joint 3rd (38 st) with fellow Indian keeper Syed Kirmani in Tests.

Now, after seeing the international list, a question pops up in my mind that what makes Dhoni effect stumpings at much faster rate compared to his other contemporaries?

The answer is "His hand and wrist movement." While a normal keeper to ensure clean gathering, would move their hands backward which increases the time between collecting the ball and hitting the stumps, Dhoni, the keeper, uses his wrists. While his hands are going towards the stumps, there’s a slight flick of the wrists in the backward direction, which keeps the ball in motion within his gloves, thereby making him effect stumping at a much faster pace than the other contemporary keepers.

Hope there's a lot more lightning to come from the lightning fast hands of the former Indian captain.
